The 7th Uniferon Global Anaemia Summit was held in
Helsingoer, Denmark from September 3-5, 2014 with a global
delegation of leading swine producers, veterinarians and industry
consultants representing 14 countries. The purpose of the summit
was to shed light on the many different aspects of iron anaemia and
learn how to improve the productivity of producers worldwide.
The summit included lectures from guest speakers and farm
tours. The lectures covered topics ranging from the epidemiological
situation in central and Eastern Europe related to African Swine
Fever to the correlation between haemoglobin and growth in piglets
post weaning. The farm tours functioned as hands-on anaemia clinics
where attendees worked alongside veterinarians to complete detailed
worksheets related to anaemia status.
The summit delegation also received a message from the
international Iron Expert Board (IEB) and an introduction to the
F.A.C.T program. The acronym F.A.C.T stands for Farm Anaemia
Certification & Training and is a program, developed by
Pharmacosmos, that eliminates guesswork of anaemia/iron
status with accurate, fast, and convenient Hb pen-side detection.
F.A.C.T was presented by member of the Iron Expert Board, Tom
Gillespie US, who has worked with pig welfare since 1981. His
professional involvement includes membership in the American
Association of Swine Veterinarians, American Veterinary Medical
Association and Indiana Veterinary Medical Association. Tom is the
past president of American Association of Swine Veterinarians
(AASV) and has serviced on numerous committees either as a member
or as the chairperson.
The outcome of each Summit is that the swine industry learns
more about accurate pen-side anaemia detection and treatment
protocols that help improve the producer's return on
investment.
